Takai Co., Ltd. is a long-established company that has been in the brewing industry for 294 years. During this time, regardless of our prosperous past, we chose to avoid expanding to a widescale domestic scale and instead directed our focus on selling locally. To an almost stubborn degree, we have specialized our brewing lineup to center around the traditional and reputable brands of “Daiginjo Iwao” and “Junmai Ginjo Iwao”. As a result, today in Fujioka City, when speaking of “Japanese sake”, our “Iwao” would be the first thing that comes to mind.
Takai Co., Ltd. was founded in 14th year of the Kyoho era (1729), in the middle of the Edo period, and is a sake brewery with a proud history of 294 years. Amidst the Kyoho era, where Fujioka had the unique custom of “no lending land to outsiders”, ‘Sakuemon Takai’ the first, an Omi-Hino merchant, who, after having peddled his business countless times, was recognized for his diligent efforts by the local castle lord and called on to open a brewery in Fujioka. This brewery went on to contribute as a core business in Fujioka City.

Takai Co., Ltd. established its business base in the Edo and Meiji periods and began brewing sake, shoyu and miso. Gradually, we downsized and concentrated on sake brewing. We will soon commemorate 300 years as a sake brewery.
The fact that we will soon be celebrating our history as a 300-year-old prestigious sake brewery we owe wholeheartedly to the support of the people of Fujioka City, as is only to their support that we have been in operation for so many years. Moving forward, we will strive to develop new sales channels and make strides as a company in a way that will serve to benefit the citizens of Fujioka.
